World Prematurity Day

WPD

November 17 is World Prematurity Day, a globally celebrated awareness day to increase awareness of preterm births as well as the deaths and disabilities due to prematurity and the simple, proven, cost-effective measures that could prevent them.

Every year, 15 million babies are born premature worldwide. While more than one million of these babies unfortunately lose their lives, others are faced with serious, lifelong health challenges. In Australia alone, 27,000 babies are born premature every year. That is, 9% of all births.

The theme of this year’s day is “Born too Soon: Providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place”.

Countless individuals and organisations from more than 100 countries join forces with activities, special events and commit to action to help address preterm birth and improve the situation of preterm babies and their families.

The CRE in Newborn in Medicine would like to express our gratitude to all participating families for the invaluable contribution you have made to address the survival and developmental challenges of preterm birth - both domestically and globally.
